The Muslim fashion industry in Indonesia faces serious challenges due to the swift flow of cheap imported products that flood the domestic market. This condition makes it more difficult for local products to compete, although Indonesia's potential to become a world Muslim fashion center is very large.
Chairperson of the Indonesian Filament Fiber and Filament Yarn Association (APSYFI), Redma Gita Wirawasta, revealed that Indonesia's opportunity in dominating the Muslim fashion market was actually wide open. However, until now, the domestic market is still dominated by imported products. "Indonesia actually has a great opportunity, but even to control the domestic market is still far, because the market is still controlled by imported goods," he said, Friday (8/15/2025).
In fact, the fiber production capacity and domestic yarn are considered sufficient. Polyester and Rayon fiber capacity is installed at 1.6 million tons per year, while the filament and spinning yarn capacity reaches 2 million tons per year. However, the mid-stream industry sector in charge of diversifying cloth actually experienced big obstacles due to competition with cheap imported products. This results in the ability to develop new fabrics and promote to global markets to be limited.
Redma emphasized that the government needs to present policies that are able to create fair competition in the domestic market. With the Fairness Competition, the mid-stream industry can develop stronger in supporting the availability of raw materials for the national Muslim fashion industry.
If this is realized, Indonesia is not only a chance to domestically control the domestic market, but can also appear as a major player in the world's Muslim fashion industry.
